Guidelines for Bikers

Always:

  • Obey signs and signals
  • Ride on the right side, with traffic
  • Use hand signals to tell drivers what you intend to do
  • When turning or crossing, look left, right, and left again
  • Use lights and reflectors at night and when visibility is poor
  • Wear a helmet
  • Ride in a straight line at least 3 feet from parked cars
  • Ride as if you are invisible — never assume that people can see you
  • Stay alert, with hands on the handle bar so you can steer at a moment’s notice
  • When possible, find routes between home and work that take you away from dangerous roads and heavy traffic areas
  • Carry children securely in special seats or trailers and make sure they wear a helmet

Don’t:

  • Don’t ride against traffic
  • Don’t wear earphones in both ears
  • Don’t carry passengers on bikes built for one rider
